Bosansko Grahovo- Diamond in the Rough
Location: 30km away from Knin-the distance between Knin and Bosansko Grahovo is half the distance between Knin and Šibenik. Šator Mountain (lake) is another 35 km from Grahovo
Note: 1) Bosnia is not a part of EU, if you have a EU SIM card you will enter roaming once you cross the border. Also bear that in mind with regard to health insurance. The currency used in Bosnia is Bosnian Convertible Mark (the currency symbol is KM, international code is BAM, exchange rate aprox 0,51 EUR per 1 KM). However, most of the places especially close to the border will take euros. Foreign tourists, especially bikers and campers, are not uncommon during the tourist season.
2) Don’t go to Šator Mountain between May and November, the road is not great even during the best weather. That being said, I wouldn't recommend going there without a car with high ground clearance.
Bosansko Grahovo has an incredible position, it’s close to Šator and Dinara mountains, Šator lake, Livanjsko polje (a karst field), Resanovačka cave, one of the most beautiful caves in this region, and it’s a birthplace of Gavrilo Princip, who’s a controversial but nonetheless important historical figure, whose assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 in Sarajevo triggered WWI.
In the war of the 90’s Bosnia suffered the most and the tensions between ethnicities still echo in the local disagreements and difficulties to cooperate on projects that should be mutually beneficial for the local community and nature.
You can get to the house where Gavrilo Princip was born and raised and take the picture from the outside, but the museum inside the house is a work in progress.
Resanovačka cave was open to the public during the Yugoslav period until the war, but since then it’s been neglected and devastated. The wooden stairs are falling apart and there are a lot of rusting nails, so make sure to take a charged headlamp suitable for caving (the ordinary won’t do, you’ll need at least 1000 lumens), and avoid the months between aprox. November and May due to the hibernation of bears.
In spite of its incredible potential Grahovo is not a developed tourist center, but when it comes to nature, the lack of human activity could be beneficial, as nature is almost undisturbed in some places.
Here’s a link to a map on how to get to Šator lake from Grahovo. Gavrilo Princip’s house is actually on the way, you’ll just need to make a small detour.
